Need to explain an EMPLOYMENT GAP in an interview?
Do this….. Whether with Recruiter, HR, or Hiring Manager:
1. Tell the truth.
2. Be precise and concise.
3. Don’t over share.
4. Don’t ramble.
5. Don’t get emotional.
Eg.
“I had to take 6 months out to focus on my children.” And STOP! “
I had to take a year out as my spouse was seriously ill.” And STOP! “
One of my parents passed away and I had to take a year out to take care of family matters.” And STOP!
There is no need to elaborate on the harsh realities of Life. Recruiters etc, aren’t paid to listen and and are not qualified to psychoanalyse or counsel it.
State what happened briefly and shut it down.
It’s not that nobody cares; it’s that most people don’t know how to respond to the trauma of others. In addition, you will avoid an emotional breakdown during the interview.
Any recruiter or employer who doesn’t recognise or have empathy for the fact that Life often gets in the way, isn’t worth your time.
The RIGHT employer will hire you regardless! Happy Tuesday, everyone! Any thoughts, please?
