Think for a minute about the last time someone FORGOT YOUR NAME — how did it feel

Think for a minute about the last time someone FORGOT YOUR NAME — how did it feel?

5 tips for remembering names:

1. Be intentional: Focus on the person, look them in the eye, set your intention to learn their name.

2. Meet and repeat: When you hear someone’s name, don’t just nod and continue the conversation. Repeat the name out loud and try asking a question with their name at the end. While they’re talking also review at least 3X while looking at their face.

3. Spell it out: Having someone spell out their name increases retention. Just ask them gracefully. This technique can be helpful if you have a visual memory, as it creates a mental picture of the person’s name.

4. Associate: Conjure a verbal game or image when you first hear a name. Alliteration, rhyming, visual cues, can all help here. (i.e. I met Nick at Noon by the Nachos)

5. Ask for a business card (or better yet find them on LinkedIn) during the conversation: If you find yourself in good conversation this is a great way to remember the name and ensure follow-up.
